pien studios is a material-driven studio. everything begins with the material: its texture, weight, structure, and potential. before anything is drawn or shaped, we take our time. we observe, explore, and work with our hands to understand what the material wants to become. the goal isn’t to make something impressive for its own sake, but to create something that makes sense: honest and lasting.
craftsmanship
craftsmanship, for us, is about pace and precision. we don’t rush the process. instead, we refine as we go, respecting both the material and the person working with it. our practice is collaborative, built with a community of skilled craftswomen and -men across the netherlands and europe. knowledge is exchanged across generations, traditional techniques are adapted, and new methods are tested until the piece feels right.

because much of our work is produced in small ateliers, we stay close to every part of the process. we know our materials, our tools, and the people we work with. nothing is outsourced without intention. everything is considered, from the source of the yarn to the hands that finish each piece.
our approach shows in the techniques we use: weaving on hand looms, knitting prototypes stitch by stitch, experimenting with beading, shaping and oiling clay beads by hand. these aren’t just steps in production, they’re part of the design language. every piece is shaped with care and time, because that’s how something lasting is made.
