CARMEN, a guesthouse, kitchen and store, officially opened its doors in November 2022. Pien created a beaded window piece for the occasion, a fitting symbol, given that the coaster itself was born during the development of Carmen. Pien had already been making the beaded pieces, without a defined purpose. It was Carmen who placed her cup on the beads and asked if it couldn't be a coaster. From that moment, the coaster was born.
Pien oiled each wooden bead by hand in the same oil Carmen's furniture is stained in, and turned them into coasters. For the store opening, Pien developed a series of one-of-a-kind coasters and wove them together into a single large window piece. During and around the event, customers could reserve an individual piece. A month later, the work was taken apart, and each person received their own coaster.
